Various dimensions and morphological characteristics of the superior articular
surf aces of the 105 atlas were observed In Koreans
The results are as follows
1. The anteroposterior diameter of the articular suiface was 23 18±2 31㎜ In
theaverage 23 61㎜ In the male and 2235㎜ In the female the area was 187 92㎜ 2011㎜² In average and It was 19023㎜² In the male and 18350㎜² In the female There was no significant difference between the left and the right articular surf ace
2. The angle of the long axis of the anterior part of arllcular surfaces tilted to median sagittal plane and the bended angle of superior the articular surfaces of the atlas was statistically significant between the male and the female and between the left and the right (P3. The shape of the superior arllcular surface was classified Into 4 types In which It was medial Indented type was mostly observed type I In the male (38 1 %) and type IV In the female(33 4%) In all cases type I was frequent In left(37 5%)
type IV was frequent In right(36 9%)
4. Frequency of occurrence of two articular surfaces was 343% In the left side 25 7% In the right side The incidence was most high In the left side of the male(38 1%)
Fre1uency of occurrence of accessory articular surface was 152% In the left side of the female 303% In the right sidel of the female 317% In the left side of the male 27 0 % In the right of the male
5. Retrotransverse groove was observed frequently rather than foramen The retrotranverse foramen(groove) was more frequent In the right and unilateral appearance was more frequent
