의료기기산업의 ESG 중심의 지속가능경영에 관한 고찰

Abstract

의료기기산업의 ESG 중심의 지속가능경영에 관한 고찰 기업은 매출, 이익 창출의 극대화를 목표로 두고 이러한 매출위주 기업의 가치를 높이는데 열을 올려왔다. 그렇게 발전을 거듭하던 중 전세계적 코로나 펜데믹으로 인한 소비심리의 위축, 환경오염에 따른 인류 생존에 대한 위협은 기업의 이익창출을 넘어 존폐에 대한 위기로 이어졌다. 이러한 상황에 대하여 사람들에게 기업은 존속을 위해 매출뿐만 아니라 미래 장기적, 지속적인, 사회에 대한 공헌 등 사회의 발전을 도모해야 한다는 인식이 확산되었다. 기업은 이를 실현하기 위해 지속가능경영, ESG를 도구로 활용하기 시작했다. 2021년에 들어 ESG 라는 용어가 등장하고, 이에 대한 관심이 높아졌다. 환경(Environment), 사회(Social), 기업지배구조(Governance)를 의미하는 ESG는 사실 새로운 개념이 아니다. 과거 기업이 지역사회 및 이해관계자들과 공생하는 의사결정을 하는 기업의 사회적 책임인 CSR(Cooperate Social Responsibility), 기업 경영에 있어 제품의 품질이나 가격정책, 마케팅 전략을 통한 수익 증대라는 가치 외에 경영투명성과 윤리경영을 강조하고, 사회발전과 환경보호에 대한 공익적 기여를 강조한 지속가능경영과 유사한 개념이라 할 수 있다. 이에 본 연구는 이러한 ESG와 더불어 지속가능경영에 대한 개념적 이해와 현황을 파악하고 타 산업과는 다른 국민건강과 보건을 책임지는, 주요 소비자로 일반적인 소비자 외에 보건의료인, 의료기관이라는 소비자를 두고있는 허가 및 건강보험 등 국가 제도의 규제를 받는 의료기기산업에 적용할 수 있는 특화요소를 개발하고 제안하기 위해 진행하였다. 더불어 실제 의료기기산업에서의 ESG 현황과 적용가능여부, 특화요소발굴 등 유의미한 요소를 도출하기 위해 의료기기 산업종사자 97명을 대상으로 설문조사를 시행하여 고찰하였으며, 현황과 문제점을 발견할 수 있었다. 설문조사 결과, ESG 경영에 대한 인식은 잘 알고 있다는 답변이 74명(76.3%)로 높았으며, 의료기기 산업 특화 ESG경영 도입 및 별도의 평가지표에 대하여 필요하다는 의견이 92명(94.8%)로 나타났다. 또한, 응답자의 소속기관의 ESG 담당자 유무에 대하여 없다는 답변이 55명(56.7%)으로 더 높은 비중을 차지하는 등 아직 의료기기 업계의 경우, 조직적인 대응은 미비함을 파악할 수 있었다. 본 연구는 아직 많이 연구되지 않은 국내 의료기기산업 ESG 현황을 확인하고, 고찰을 통해 문제점 발굴과 개선방안을 제시하였다는 점에서 학문적 시사점을 갖는다. 본연구를 통해 대한민국 의료기기산업이 국민의 건강과 보건을 지킴에 있어 더 많은 역할을 하고 세계로 나아감에 도움이 되길 기대한다. To maximize sales and profits, companies have been striving to increase the value of these revenue-driven businesses. However, the global coronavirus pandemic, which has led to a decline in consumer sentiment and a threat to human survival from environmental pollution, has led to a crisis in the survival of companies beyond profit creation. In response to this situation, people have realized that to survive, companies must not only make sales but also promote the development of society, including long-term, continuous contributions to future society. To achieve this, companies began to use sustainability management, or ESG, as a tool. In 2021, the term ESG emerged and interest in it grew. ESG, which stands for environmental, social, and governance, is not a new concept. It can be said to be similar to CSR (corporate social responsibility), in which companies make decisions in a symbiotic way with local communities and stakeholders, and sustainable management, which emphasizes transparency and ethical management in addition to the value of increasing profits through product quality, pricing policy, and marketing strategy, and emphasizes public contributions to social development and environmental protection. Therefore, this study was conducted to understand the conceptual understanding and current status of ESG and sustainability management, and to develop and propose specialized factors that can be applied to the medical device industry, which is regulated by national systems such as licensing and Reimbursement, is responsible for national health and healthcare, and has health professions and medical institutions as general consumers, which is different from other industries. In addition, a survey was conducted among 97 employees in the medical device industry to understand the current status of ESG in the actual medical device industry, whether it is applicable, and to identify meaningful factors such as specialized factors. As a result of the survey, 74 respondents (76.3%) said they were familiar with ESG management, and 92 respondents (94.8%) said it was necessary to implement ESG management and separate evaluation indicators specific to the medical device industry. In addition, 55 respondents (56.7%) said their organization didn’t have an ESG manager, indicating that the medical device industry still lacks systematic countermeasures. This study has academic implications in that it identifies the current status of ESG in the Korean medical device industry, which has not been studied much, and suggests problems and improvement plans through consideration. It is hoped that this study will help the Korean medical device industry to play a greater role in protecting people's health and well-being and to move forward globally.
