Keywords: This article chronologically traces the documents on the construction process of Yonsei University Medical Center in Shinchon. In this article, I trace the process from right after the Korean War in 1953 to the establishment of Shinchon Yonsei University Medical Center in 1962 based on data and research papers inside and outside the Yonsei University Medical Center. In 1955, the primary reason for locating the new medical center in Shinchon was the construction of a 60-bed Chest Hospital for tuberculosis treatment As the construction progressed, the outpatient clinic was built as a separate building and the Severance Medical School and Nursing School buildings were moved to Shinchon. This was achieved by selling the Severance building in front of Seoul Station as well as raising donations from other external organizations and domestically. The launch of Shinchon Yonsei University Medical Center in 1962 goes beyond the history of a medical institution ; the larger historical implications of the center become clearer when we consider a number of factors inside and outside the Yonsei University Medical Center. Therefore, four factors must be considered to understand the meaning of the construction of the Yonsei University Medical Center in Shinchon: the personal and historical internal factors and the social and structural external factors.
