Abstract
Persistant regular oscillation of the pupil can be induced using a slit lamp. The average period of these oscillations has been referred to the pupil cycle time. The pupil cycle time is a quantitative measurement of pupil reaction to light and it reflects the optic nerve function. In order to assess the pupil cycle time in amblyopia and change of the pupil cycle time before and after occlusion therapy, 24 monocualr amblyopia children aged from 4 to 11 years old were investigated. The mean pupil cycle time was 1448 +or- 344 msec in amblyopic eyes, 1354 +or- 278 msec in non-amblyopic eyes. As compare to non-amblyopic eye, the pupil cycle time of amblyopic eye was significantly prolonged. After the occlusion therapy, the mean pupil cycle time in amblyopic eyes(1537 +or- 381 msec was significantly reduced as compare to preocclusion one(1346 +or- 213 msec). We suppose the defect of the arc of pupillary light reflex and the possibility of the unkown pathway of pupillary light reflex in amblyopic eyes(J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 38: 290-295, 1997).
