Purpose: To report two cases of progressive macular changes in X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS) treated with vitrectomy.
Patients: A 16-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy with progressive deterioration of vision underwent vitrectomy with internal limiting membrane peeling with or without gas injection for vitreous traction. Optical coherence tomography was performed to monitor morphologic changes of the macula before and after surgery.
Results: During follow-up (at 6 months and 3 months, respectively), both patients had anatomical improvement and minimal improvement in vision.
Conclusion: We postulate that vitreous tractional force causes the progressive structural deformity of the macula in XLRS.
