The size and shape of the kidney, the configuration of the renal hilum and the relative position of the renal artery and vein and the ureter at the hilum were observed through dissection of 204 kidneys from Korean adult cadavers(Including 81 kidneys from autopsy).
The results were as follows:
1. The average vertical length of kidney was 10.0±0.9cm, horizontal length 5.8±0.6cm, thickness 3.8±0.5cm, and there was no difference between the size of the right and left kidney.
2. The shape of kidney was classified into 3 groups according to the ratio of the horizontal length to vertical length. The bean shaped kidney was 73% in Incidence.
3. The configuration of the renal hilum was remarkably variable. It was directed medialward in the majority of cases(60%). In the ventralward, It was directed ventralward or dorsal-ward.
4. According to the anatomical relationship of the renal artery and vein and the ureter at the proximal point of 1 cm from the medial plane of the kidney. The arrangement could be classified Into five types. In the most common type(68.1%) the renal artery was observed to be superior to renal vein and the ureter posterior to it. In 22.1% of cases, however, the renal artery was observed to be anterior to the renal Vein.
5. The branching pattern of the renal artery at the medial plane of the kidney was classified into 4 types. In 42.2% of cases, the renal artery did not divide at the plane.
6. On the hilar plane, the relationship of branches of the renal artery, vein and the ureter was observed. The arterial branches were arranged around the ureter as a ring In 91.2 % of the cases, but, In the rest, the ureter was observed to be out of the arterial nng.
