The extensor pollicis brevis which is a muscle peculiar to human, is individualized to a greater degree(sometimes absent), being fused with the abductor pollicis longus as in the simiidae. The authors investigated the insertion type and number of the accessory tendon slip or slips of the extensor pollicis brevis in Korean. The results are summarized as follows.
1.In the study of 166 upper extremities, the extensor pollicis brevis inserted onto the proximal phalanx (Type Ⅰ) in 69.9%, distal phalanx (Type Ⅱ) in 10.8%, both distal and proximal phalanx(Type Ⅲ) in 13.3%, and another site or sites( Type Ⅳ,Ⅴ,Ⅵ,Ⅶ) in 4.8% of cases, We also observed absence of this muscle in 1.2%. In an observation of the number of accessory tendon slip of each muscle, the muscle terminated in single tendon in 76.5%, two tendons in 19.9% and three tendons in only 2.4% of cases.
2.The extensor pollicis brevis were more individualized in female than male.
3.Of the74 cadavers studied 75.5% showed symmetry of the right and left side in insertion of the extensor pollicis brecis
