Abstract
(Background and Objective) This study aims to explore strategies to enhance the residential suitability of elderly women living alone in rural fishing villages experiencing natural aging. Unlike previous studies focusing on elderly individuals with disabilities or specific illnesses, this research analyzes how housing environments affect independent living during the natural aging process and seeks practical solutions. Particularly, it addresses the unique context of rural areas where access to health care services and housing renovation support is limited, proposing actionable strategies for aging-friendly housing improvement. Furthermore, this study seeks to identify specific environmental modifications that can prolong independent living and improve the quality of life for this demographic. (Methods) This study employed in-depth individual interviews, on-site housing measurements, and observational records, conducted in July 2023. The research participants were elderly women living alone, selected based on recommendations from the Urban Regeneration Support Center and residents' associations. The study examined the interaction between the participants’ social, physical, and economic conditions and their residential environment. (Results) The findings reveal that the target housing exhibited high floor level differences and diverse elevation changes within its spaces, causing significant mobility challenges and safety risks. From the perspective of Environmental Press Theory, these structural issues exacerbated the functional limitations of aging residents, increasing the risk of falls, impeding independent living, and intensifying social isolation. Considering economic and architectural constraints that hinder large-scale renovations, the study identified installing safety grab bars as a practical, cost-effective solution to improve mobility and safety. The results demonstrated that grab bars enhance elderly residents' autonomy and mobility, prevent falls, and provide psychological reassurance. (Conclusions) This study proposes the installation of safety grab bars as a feasible improvement measure that minimizes economic and architectural burdens while delivering substantial benefits. This intervention improves mobility and independent living while reducing fall risks and enhancing satisfaction with residential safety. Furthermore, the study underscores the significance of interdisciplinary collaboration between housing environment research and medical science to analyze the relationship between aging and housing modification. It highlights the urgent need for improvements in the housing environments of elderly residents in isolated rural communities, addressing the lack of information and support in these areas. Finally, incorporating advanced EduTech solutions can empower elderly individuals to recognize the need for housing improvements and make informed decisions regarding their living environments. This study offers practical guidelines for sustainable housing improvements for aging populations and contributes to shaping future policy and educational interventions.
