Abstract
In this article, in order to comprehend the development process of medical theories from the Koryo Dynasty to the early Joseon Dynasty, I had examined Hyangyakjesaengjibseongbang(鄕藥濟生集成方)(1399).
In the main text, the importance of Shengjizonglu(聖濟總錄) and the 'four great physicians in the Jin and Yuan Dynasties(金元四大家)' was described in detail through a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the medical books on which Hyangyakjesaengjibseongbang relied. Next, I explore how the phenomenon of accepting Shengjizonglu and the 'four great physicians in the Jin and Yuan Dynasties' during the Hyangyakjesaengjibseongbang period had a relationship with medical knowledge of the Koryo Dynasty.
The superficial reasons for the rapid change in the medical community in the late Koryo and early Joseon Dynasty were the newly published Shengjizonglu in the Yuan Dynasty and the new theories of the four great physicians in the Jin and Yuan Dynasties. However, internally, these changes can be attributed to the shifts in etiology theories that had been developing since the Koryo Dynasty. As such, the emphasis on the theory of external sense, which emerged by combining internal and external causes, was the meaning of the medical history occupied by Hyangyakjesaengjibseongbang in Korean medieval history.
