Objectives
This study aims to present the current treatment options for idiopathic scoliosis.
Summary of Literature Review
The treatment options for idiopathic scoliosis are largely categorized into 3 groups (observation, a brace, and surgery), and the choice is made with consideration of the patient’s maturity and the characteristics of the curvature.
Materials and Methods
A review of the previous literature was done and the current consensus on idiopathic scoliosis was summarized.
Results
The most frequently used surgical method is the posterior approach and fusion. Consideration of the postoperative shoulder and body balance is important with preserving mobile segments. The growth-sparing surgical technique using a growing rod can be applied in patients with early-onset scoliosis and remaining growth.
Conclusions
The treatment for idiopathic scoliosis should be based on the patient’s age and the characteristics of the curvature.
