Irritable Bowel Syndrome(IBS) or IBS-type symptoms are commonly reported to have high prevalence in previous studies. Recently many previous studies have been performed about the association between stress and IBS or IBS-type symptoms in the case of other countries. This study was performed to study the prevalence of IBS-type symptoms and the relationship between stress and IBS-type symptoms in Korea. A survey was performed in 260 persons of pre-medical, medical, dental and nursing students. We used the Rome II criteria to define IBS-type symptoms, and the BEPSI-K questionnaires to grade stress. All questionnaires are reported by self. The prevalence of IBS-type symptoms in Korean students studying in the health related professions is 14.5%, with males predominating at 15.1%, and women 13.9%. The students with more stress had a higher odd ratio(13.6) than students with low stress. IBS is a relatively common disease, but its prevalence and risk factors for Korean people are not well studied.
