dc.description.abstract | This paper examines why doctors, mainly the Severance Union Medical College(SUMC) graduates went to Shanghai and how they became deeply involved with the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea(PGRK). First of all, it is necessary to pay attention to the geopolitical location of Shanghai. While Manchuria was a military occupied territory by Japan, it could be invaded at any time. On the other hand, Shanghai could be politically free by forming a special space called semi-colonial state. On the contrary, Shanghai was free to form a special space called semi-colonial state. Especially in the reorganization of the international order after the First World War, Woodrow Wilson's concept of national self-determination increased the possibility of independence of the minorities. In response to this, the PGRK was established in Shanghai, and independent activists gathered in the PGRK. Second, the SUMC graduates are joining the PGRK based on their experiences of independence exercise and the representativeness of the community rather than any personal ties such as school relations and kinship. Gwak Byeong-gyu participated in the PGRK on behalf of independence movements such as Siberia, Jeong Yeong-jun in Manchuria, Ju Hyeon-cheuk and Shin Chang-hee in Pyeongan-do, and Shin Hyeon-chang in Chungcheong-do. Thirdly, the SUMC graduates are also deeply in touch with key figures in the PGRK. First of all, it is necessary to pay attention to the group of Heungsadan, focusing on Ahn Chang-ho. Ahn Chang-ho, who served as the secretary-general of the PGRK, was Kim Chang-se’s the brother-in-law. In addition to Kim Chang-se, SUMC graduates, such as Ju Hyeon-cheuk and Shin Hyeon-chang, actively joined with the Young Korean Academy(Heungsadan) established by Ahn Chang Ho. Next, there is a need to pay attention to the Shinhan Youth Party, led by Yeo Un-hyeong, Kim Gyu-sik and Kim Gu. He made an important contribution to the diplomatic activities of the PGRK, such as organizing the New Korean Youngman’s Party(NKYP) and dispatching Kim Gyu-sik Kim to the Paris in February 1919. Kim Gu, Jeong Yeong-jun and Shin Chang Hee participated in the NKYP. Shin Chang-hee was Kim Gu’s brother-in-law. In addition, the YKA Group and NKYP Group joined together through the establishment of the Korea Red Cross Society. Lastly, The SUMC graduates were continuing the tradition of independence movement. Since the first graduation of SUMC, the SUMC graduates have recognized the necessity of the center of the independence movement and have joined Shanghai on behalf of the independence movements in each region in order to add strength to the PRGK. As such, the SUMC graduates not only actively participated in the March First Movement in 1919, but also actively participated in the PRGK in Shanghai. | - |
