It has been generally acknowledged that population problem is ever growing issue
which needs world-wide effort to meet. Various countries have already tackled these
problems through family planning programs, while others are marking effort to
establish a population policy.
To establish population policy, a demographic index, such as population
composition, fertility rate, mortality rate and population growth rate, should be
constructed.
However, in rural Korea, only crude death rate in some part of areas have been
measured. The age specific mortality rate through life table funcions is yet to be
measured since 1950.
There has been a great improvement in the theory of derivation of life table
functions from the population census. This would enable us to measure the age
specific mortality rate, improving the accuracy of the vital data.
This study has initially been designed to measure the periodic mortality rate by
sex and age in rural areas from 1960 to 1966 in Korea.
The data have been collected from the population censuses of 1960 and 1966 and
Special Demographic Survey of 1966. The accuracy of these data have been tested
beforehand.
The Brass's method, i.e., "Children Ever Born" method and his general standard
life table have been applied to measure the childhood mortality rate and to
construct the life table functions.
The important findings are :
1. During the year 1960-1966 in rural Korea, the infant mortality rates (1g0)
were 59.5 per 1,000 live births for both sexes.
2. The probability of dying between exact age of one and exact age of five (4g1)
in rural Korea by Brass's ever born method were 67.7 per 1,000 births for male and
52.1 per 1,000 births for female.
3. The life expectancy at birth (e0) in rural Korea was 46.9 years for male and
53.2 years for female.
4. The life expectancy at the age of one (e1) in rural Korea was 48.9 years for
male and 55.6 years for female.
