This study investigated the health status of rural Korean children from birth to

six years old as of August 1974.

The survey areas were Son won Myun and Nae Ga Myun of Kang Wha Gun, Kyung Ki Do.

The total number of children examined was 88% of all resident children aged 0-6

in the two areas.

The standard of health status measurement is that of weight and arm

circumference.

For the present study, a local malnutrition grade score was established and was

compared to an international malnutrition grade score given by the WHO East Asia

Regional Office and the results of their 1967 National Child Growth Survey in

Korea.

The results were analysed according to three variables:

(1) types of feeding

(2) commencement of weaning

(3) number of children

The outstanding result is that, compared to the international standard, no

significant malnutrition exists in the surveyed area.

The weight mean for babies aged 0-6 months is above that of the 1967 survey and

also above the international mean.

However, it drops below the international mean after age 7 months.

Those children whose weaning period began between 12-35 months appear to have a

better nutritional status than children whose standard weaning period began before

or after these ages.

Among children with a greater number of siblings and among those without

siblings, the malnutrition score tends to be higher.

This area can be said to have no malnutrition since the level of approximately

99% of the children is above the malnutrition line.

The results of this study will serve as the baseline for an ongoing record system

of weights and also for priority setting in the nutrition education program for

child care within the Health Post Project conducted in Kang Wha Gun.
