Abstract

[영문]Breakthrough is a general problem when sampling for vinyl chloride monomer(VCM). It was reported that sampling time, flow rate, concentration of the sample, temperature, humidity, and the characteristics of the activated tube are main factors related to breakthrough. However, no study has been conducted reporting the effect of temperature and sampling volume simultaneously. Therefore, to determine detection trend in each section of sorbent tube by sampling volume and temperature during VCM sampling based on National Institude for Occupational Safety and Health(NIOSH) method 1007. and to provide adequate sampling volume for sampling VCM without breakthrough, volume of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5ℓ each in VCM concentration of 1, 5, 10, 15, 20ppm at the rate of 0.05ℓ/min were sampled in artificial temperature conditions of 22℃, 40℃. Samples were collected on two NIOSH-recommended coconut shell charcoal tubes placed in series in sampling train. The results were as follows;

In temperature of 22℃, 100% of adsorbed amounts in VCM concentration of 1, 5, 10, and 15ppm was detected in first section without relation of sampling volume, but in 20ppm, detection rate is mean 99.56% in first section, mean 0.44% in second section. In temperature of 40℃, 100% of adsorbed amounts in VCM concentration of 1ppm was detected in first section. In 10, 15, and 20ppm, detection rates of second, third, and forth section were decreased statistical significantly by reduction of sampling volume.

In determination of breakthrough based on NIOSH manual, no breakthrough was occurred to 20ppm in temperature of 22℃. In temperature of 40℃, a breakthrough was occurred in 10, 15, and 20ppm when sampling volume was 5ℓ although no breakthrough was occurred when sampling volume was 3ℓ. As 1ppm of VCM concentration was increased, the odds ratio for occurrence of breakthrough was 1.270 (95% C.I. : 1.147∼1.412). As 1ℓof sampling volume was increased, the odds ratio for occurrence of breakthrough was 4.726 (95% C.I. : 2.459∼9.081).

Finally, in environment of temperature 22℃, no breakthrough may be occurred during sampling for VCM by NIOSH method No 1007 up to 20ppm. During sampling for VCM in environment of temperature 40℃, no breakthrough may be occurred in 1∼5ppm when sampling volume is 5ℓ, and we think that no breakthrough may be occurred in 10∼20ppm if sampling volume is 3ℓ.
