School Health is an important field of public health for improving and promoting the health of the next generation and the Nation. However, school health has not been recognized as an important field by school personnel and the community.
Fortunately, the School Health Law was promulgated on March, 1967 for the purpose of better maintenance and promotion of the health of the school population.
According to the school health law, every school must employ school health personnel, such as a physician, dentist pharmacist and nurse. However, in reality the school nurse alone takes all responsibility for school health service her responsibility is unusually heavy and she is required to have more professional
ability and capability in the school health program.
In order to study the knowledge and practice of school nurses about the school health law, the following results were obtained through a mail survey questionnaire done as of October, 1971 in Seoul:
1. Educational level of school nurses: 37.4% nurses : 37.4% of the total nurses graduate from nursing colleges, and only 36% had in-service education for school health.
2. In regard to the length of the professional life as a school nurse: 72% of elementary school nurses have worked for longer than 5 years.
3. Forth and five tenths percent(40.5%) of the total nurses knew that the school health law was practiced and an average mark was 53% through certain questionnaire.
4. They had relatively good understanding about physical examination (78%) but less knowledge about school environmental health(28%).
5. A practice rate of knowledge about school health law were found out in an average 69% in elementary and secondary schools.
6. The longer the school nurses have served with the school health program the more knowledge about school health they have.
7. There was no correlation nursing education and knowledge on school health.
8. The school nurses who had in-service training are understood school health better than the untrained. This was significant statistically according to X**2 test above the 95.0% confidence level.
