Abstract
Purpose: The purposes of this descriptive study were to examine the perception of patient safety culture and level of safety compliance of hospital nurses and determine the correlation between perception of patient safety culture and safety compliance in order to present fundamental data for the development of educational programs and policies on patient safety in hospital. Method: The study was designed as a descriptive study using the survey tool for patient safety culture developed by AHRQ (2004) and the tool developed by Kim et al. (2007), which was modified to a 68-question set for the purpose of this study. The safety behavior compliance scale developed by Hayers et al. (1998) and Jung (2010) was used to measure safety compliance. For fall prevention activities, a tool of 12 questions that was developed by the Korea Health Industry Development Institute was used. The data were collected from the nurses who worked in the hospital from March 24 to April 5, 2014 and were analyzed using SPSS Win 18.0.Result: The mean score for hospital nurses` perception of patient safety culture and their compliance score on patient safety were 3.52(±.46) and 3.87(±.58), respectively. The perception levels of patient safety culture were significantly different according to educational level and work hours. Levels of safety behavior compliance were significantly different according to educational level, marital status and work hours. Levels of fall prevention activities were significantly different according to educational level and marital status. The perception on patient safety culture and compliance with patient safety were highly correlated (r=.760, p<.01), and all the subcategories of patient safety culture had a significant correlation with scores for compliance with patient safety. Especially the categories of perception of patient safety culture such as “Procedure
Compliance " “ Communication Openness " and “Organizational Learning" had high correlation with compliance in patient safety. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that patient safety culture is highly correlated with safety compliance in hospital nurses, and so may be utilized to develop strategies for improving safety compliance for patient safety management.
