Abstract

(Directed by Professor Cho Ja Kim, Ph.D in Nursing)

The purpose of this study was to compare work stress between nurses on general

wards and those in the ICU and to identify socio-demographic variables that are

related to stress.

The subjects of this study were nurses of Y University hospital in Seoul. The

questionnaire used to measure stress was an amending PNOSS. Nurses making up the

sample were from a general unit(82) and the ICU(53) for a total of 136 nurses.

Stress for nurses can be related to work load, role comflicts. skill,

relationships with co-workers, relationships with other health workers,

relationships with patients, relationships with senior personnel and duty

schedules. Socio-demographic variables including age, service career, service

career in present unit, education level, marriage status and religion were studied

to measure the relationship with stress.

The data were analyzed using regression, ANOVA, t-test. The findings of study are

as follows:

1) The average score for stress was 3.64 points which is between a little bit

level and high level of stress.

2) For senior presonnel and for the duty schedule stress category, nurses who

were older, have longer service careers, were junior college graduates, and were

married experienced higher level of stress.

3) ICU nurses experience higher stress than those in general nurses related to

skills, relationships with co-workers, relationships with health participants,

relationships with patients, relationships with senior personnel and duty schedule

category.

4) When age, service career, educational level, marriage status and service ward

and seniority were entered into the regression equation, it was founded that

service career, education level, service ward were the variables explaining

variance significantly in stress. That is, nurses who have a longer service term, a

lower education level, and worked in the ICU, had higher levels of stress.

5) When age, service career, educational level, marriage status and service ward

and duty schedule category were entered into the regression equation, it was

founded that service ward, and service career explained the variance significantly

in the stress. That is, nurses who worked in the ICU and have longer service terms

experience higher levels of stress.

With these results, the following suggestion are made:

Because the nurses who work in the ICU, graduated from junior college, and have

longer service experence higher work stress, it is important to examine the reasons

for this and to develop programs to help those nurses to reduce the stress.
