Listeria momocytogenes

Mycobacterium tuberculosis is an intracellular parasite like Mycobacterium leprae

and Listeria monocytogenes, and host resistance depends mainly upon cell mediated

immune reaction and expressed non-specifically by activated macrophages with

enhanced bactericidal activities.

The Effect of dextran sulfate (DS 500) on cell mediated immune responses has been

shown to be suppressive or stimulatory.

Especially, DS 500 is known to be capable of suppressing cell mediated immune

responses in Listeria monocytogenes infection.

Major immunity to infection by Listeria monocytogenes, another intracellular

parasite, is also known to be cellular immune mechanism and the resistance is

interpreted as being due to the enhanced bactericidal activity of mono-nuclear

phagocytes.

It was observed the reduced host resistance to Tubercle bacilli infection by the

DS 500 administration.

In the group that DS 500 (50mg/kg) was given 24hr before innoculationof tubercle

bacilli intraperitoneally, showed s slight increase in growth of tubercle acilli,

but in the group of animals to which DS 500 (50mg/kg) was administered every other

day after tubercle bacilli infection, bacterial growth was much more enhanced than

that in control and the mortality rate due to tubercle bacilli infecion was

increased.

This might suggest that continuous administration of DS 500 could suppress the

host defence mechanism against tubercle bacilli infection.
