Survey of Physica1 Therapist Work Efficiency in Seoul Area Hospitals

Park, Chan-Eui

Department of Public Health The Graduate School Yonsei University.

(Directed by Prof. Jung Soon Shin M.D.)

A survey of physical therapists' work load and efficiency was done. In order to

increase the work efficiency and manage manpower to match the annual increasing

physical therapists' work 10ad, 58 physical therapists employed in 14 hospitals

were surveyed during the period January 11 1981 to December 31, 1981 to studs their

demographic characteristics, work load, physical therapy department space area and

therapeutic equipment.

The average number of patients treated by one physical therapist in one day was

16 persons and the average work quotient per therapist was 4.6. This is higher than

the proper work quotient of 3.3 and shorts that theme therapists are overworked.

The situation is such that an increase of physical therapy staff is Inevitable.

Of the average work space in all physical therapy departments in the hospitals

surveyed, the space of departments in general hospitals (Group A) was 214.9 ㎡ and

in hospitals(Group B) 26.8 ㎡. From the result of calculation of the estimated

apace needed for general treatment room space, the space in 2 general hospitals

(Group A) and 3 hospitals (Group B ) was small.

In 2 general hospitals (Group A) and 3 hospitals (Group B), the actual space was

smaller when compacted with the estimated space So, even when considering the case

of a general treatment space the necessity for enlargement to improve the

efficiency of the therapy work was evident.

In regard to the situation of therapeutic equipment situated in physical therapy

departments, the total of all types of equipment was 37 with a total of 483

individual pieces of equipment. General hospitals (Group A) had all 37 kinds of

equipment totalling 379 (78.5%) individual pieces and hospitals (Group B) had only

23 kinds with a total of 104 (21.5%) individual pieces.

The therapeutic equipment in the hospitals (Group B) was very small compared with

that of general hospitals (Group A) that it goes without saying that they could not

be of any help in reducing the work load. Therefore it can be seen that the

situation is one in which the efficiency of treatment is decreased and this to a

matter of grave concern.
