A Survey on Sex Education for Primary School Children

With the rapid development of our society, we can see many new problems occuring.

One of these problems is sex. Most children have not had an adequate education

reagarding sex.

The purpose of this survey is to obtain data about;

1) Children's ideas about sex.

2) How their parents think about sex education for their children.

3) What parents want to do to educate their children about sex.

Questionaires were distributed to five hundred primary school children and four

hundred parents (all living in seoul) in September 1973.

The result were as follows:

Children

1. Twenty two point nine percent of the children said that they consult with

their mothers about sex problems.

Twenty five point two percent said they consulted with their mothers.

2. There was a great difference between where the children said they received sex

information and where their parents said they received sex information.

Children: Publication - 45.5%

Mass-media - 44.1%

Personal-media - 10.4%

Parent: Mass-media - 47.9%

Publication - 24.0%

Personal-media - 25.5%

Others - 2.6%

3. In answer to the question, "How can a baby be born?", 34.6% of the children

used the word "pregnant" or "give birth."

4. Sixty two point seven percent of the boys and girls said that they were

interested in playing together. Sixty nine point six percent of the children said

that they like to have a friend of the opposite sex.

5. Sixty six point four percent of the children said that they think males and

females are equal.

6. Fifteen point nine percent of the girl respondent has started menstruating and

55.8% of them had a prior Knowledge.

Parents

1. Eighty five point three percent of the parents said that sex education is

necessary for their children. they gave their own source of knowledge about sex as

follows:

Publication - 59.6%

Mass-media and other sources -40.4%

2. Eighty point one percent of the parents felt that sex can become a social

problem.

3. Eleven point two percent of them believe that they can easily teach their

children sex education but 83.9% of them did not want to directly answer their

children's embarassing questions.

4. Sixty three point four percent of the parents would like the school to have

classes which would help their children develop a healthy attitude toward sex.
