The degree which an individual continues to maintain a behavior strategy varies widely, but the neural basis of cognitive control in behavioral persistence is still unclear. We investigated the functional connectivity between the orbitofrontal cortex and the striatum during a decision-making task using functional MRI in twenty-four healthy participants. The lateral orbitofrontal cortex showed connectivity with the dorsal and ventral striatum, whereas the medial orbitofrontal cortex showed connectivity with the amygdala, the cingulate cortex and the ventral striatum. The functional connectivity strength between the medial orbitofrontal cortex and the ventral striatum correlated with the number of persistent responses. The top-down control of the medial orbitofrontal cortex to the ventral striatum appears to be a critical component of the individual differences in addressing uncertain conditions
