(Directed by profossor Hyun Mo Kwak, M.D.)

The study was made of the changes in weight during pregnancy of 500 normal Korean

women. Gassner in 1862 made the first observation of weight changes during

pregnancy and Zangemeister in 1916 suggested weight gains as a means of detecting

incipient toxemia. Davis in 1923 was the first writer on this subject in America.

The purpose of investigation as to standarize weight gain during pregnancy and to

distinguish the normal from the abnormal. Modern obstetrics has been practiced in

our country, but no serious attempt to establish the mormal weight gain for Korean

women during pregnancy gas come to our attention, and thus it was necessary for us

to establish mormal data.

The average total weight gain throughout pregnancy was about 11.02kg(24.2lbs),

the figure being higher for primigravida(about 11.7kg) and lower for

multigravida(10.26kg). The average total weight gain throughout pregnancy was about

2kg(4.4lbs) less than that for American Women.

Five hundred cases of normal pregnancy who visited to our O.P.D. during the last

year (1971) were analysed.

The results are as follows :

1. The average total weight gain throughout pregnancy was about 11.02kg(24.2lbs).

The largest gain was in the 28 weeks and a gain of more than 2.07kg in any one

month of pregnancy may be regarded as abnormal unless other factors are involved.

2. The 500 cases include 300 primipara and 200 multipara. The average weight gain

of the primipara was 11.7kg and of the multipara 10.26kg. The primipara gained

about 1.4kg more than multipara.

3. Those of high parity(gravida 4 and more) gained the least of all, about 10kg.

4. The weight gain was studied according to the age of the patient and the

younger groups were found to gain more than the older.

5. Seasonal variation showed that the patients gained mord during the cold

weather in winter and early spring. This seemed to correspond to the increasing

incidences of the toxemia of these seasons.

6. The height of the fundus was studied according to the gestational period of

the patient. In primiparait was found to drop between the 32 week to the 36 week.
