The purpose of this study was to investigate hospital middle managers' views of human nature which have influence on their personnel management behavioral style and to examine the relationship among the variables. In this study, the view of
human nature was classified as social -deterministic, voluntaristic, instinctive and interactive, and the personnel management behavioral style was classified as sympathetic, authoritative, democratic and noninterfering. The questionnaires for this study were answered by 150 middle managers who were working in a university hospital located in Seoul in May 1989.
The major results are as follows :
1. Respondents were inclined to score highest in the voluntaristic view of human nature and sympathetic personnel management behavioral style.
2. The view of human nature was related to the sex, religion, and occupation of the respondent. Personnel management behavioral style was related to religion, occupation type, and voluntaristic and interactive views of human nature.
3. By multiple regression analysis using a stepwise selection of independent
variables for each personnel management behavioral style:
1) The interactive view of human nature was a statistically significant variable of the sympathetic style.
2) The social-deterministic view of human nature was a statistically significant variable of the authoritative style.
3) The voluntaristic and interactive views of human nature were a statistically significant variables of the democratic style.
4) The voluntaristic view of human nature was a statistically significant variable of the noninterfering style.
These results suggest that the hospital middle managers view of human nature is one of the important factors affecting their personnel management behavioral style.
For further study, consideration of additional variables such as organizational structure, superiors and staff, home environment, etc. is recommended.
