Abstract

(Feetham Family Functioning Survey: F

간이화한 간이형 C.M.I.

r=-,1735, p<.1).

This study was a correlational study using a descriptive design to Investigate

the relationship between family functioning and the health status of the family

members.

The purpose of the study was to identify the relationship between family

functioning and the health status of the family members in order to provide

possible predictors of health status in family members and basic data for further

research about family functioning and the health of family members.

This study employed Moos biosocial resonance concept of illness as its principal

theoretical framework and reviewed related areas of family, family functioning and

health status of family members.

The criteria for selecting subjects for thins study were as follows:

1. nuclear families

2. families whose members all love together and are residents of Seoul.

3. families with less than 5 members.

4. families in which all members are over 10 years of age

The sample subjects for this study were chosen by convenience sampling. First 98

families, which complied with the criteria for selecting the subjects, were chosen

from “W” elementary school students. Data collection was done for 83 families but

only 76 families were used in the final analysis as families with missing or

inaccurate data were excluded.

The research methods used were structured questionnaires .The health states of

the family members was measured using Cornell Medical Index designed by Brodman and

modified by Nam Ho Chang. The CMI is composed of 57 items followed by “yes” and

“no” .A “yes” means a health problem is present. Family functioning was

measured using Feetham Family Functioning Survey designed by Feetham. FFFS is

composed of 21 items . But after factor analysis only 18 items were used for this

study. Each item is constructed in the Porter Format. The Porter Format consists of

a stem that provides a referent for three questions. The respondent is required to

rate each question on a 7-point scale.

Data for this study were collected over a period of 8 days from the 37th of March

to the 6th of April 1988 using the questionnaires.

Incidence and percentage were used to analyze the characteristics of the family.

Means and standard deviation were used to analyse the health status of the family

members and family functioning. ANOVA was used to analyze the differences in the

family functioning score and the health scores of family members between groups

classified according to the characteristics of the family. Pearson correlation

coefficient was used 7o analyze the relationship between family functioning and the

health status of family members.

The results of this study were as follows:

1. On the CMI the health scores for family members can range from 0 to 57. The

higher the health score of the family is, the worse the health status is,

The health scores of the family members of the sample ranged from 0 to 39 and the

mean score was 11.907. Therefore, the health status of family members was assessed

as good.

2. The family functioning existing score, desired score, importance score, can

range from 18 to 126. The higher the existing score is. the better the family

functioning is. The higher the desired score is, the greater the amount of family

functioning the family desires. The higher the importance. score is, the more

important family functioning is seen to be. Family functioning satisfaction score

(= discrepancy score) can range from 0 to 108. The higher the discrepancy score is,

the worse the satisfaction about family functioning is. The family functioning

existing score for the subjects ranged from 52 to 104 and the mean score was

79.526.The family functioning desired scores ranged from 68 to 121and the mean

score was 94.618. The family functioning importance scores ranged from 63 to 122

and the mean score was 96.079. the family functioning satisfaction scores ranged

from 2 to 50 and The mean store was 18.47.

The first hypothesis, “the better the family functioning(existing degree) is,

the better the health status of family members will be” was accepted (r = -.1735,

p = .067). -significant Level is. 1 .

The second hypotheses, “the greater family functioning satisfaction degree is,

the better the health status of the family members will be” was rejected (r =

.0633, p 〉 .1).

The differences, in the family functioning existing score and satisfaction scare

and the health scores of the family members, between groups classified according to

the characteristics Of the family, such as religion, monthly income of family.

state of residence, father's occupation, father's level of education and mother is

Level of education were not significant at the .05 level. But the differences for

mother's occupation were significant at the .05 Level.

In conclusion, this study contributes not only to nursing practice by

establishing the predictability of family functioning as a possible predictor of

health status of family members but also to nursing research by providing basic

data for further nursing research.
