Abstract
Purpose: In esophageal reconstruction, the colon could be used as an alternative organ when the stomach is unavailable. Operative morbidity and functional outcome were evaluated in addition to risk factor assessment.
Basic Procedures: From 1991 to 2008, esophageal reconstruction with the left colon was performed in 38 patients by transthoracic (n=13), transhiatal (n=9), and bypass (n=16) surgery.
Main findings: No conduit necrosis or operative mortality was observed. Morbidity was seen in 12 patients (31.6%). Leakage occurred in 3 patients (7.8%). Stricture occurred in 9 patients (23.7)
Principal Conclusions: Left colon interposition is applicable to patients with malignant and benign disease with low morbidity and mortality rate, and favorable functional status
