Normativity and Intentionality: The Goldsteinian Legacies of Canguilhem and Merleau-Ponty

Abstract

This study investigates the normative and intentional nature of life by examining Kurt Goldstein’s clinical research and its philosophical expansions by Georges Canguilhem and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. Goldstein’s holistic approach viewed organisms as integrated entities, challenging reductionist perspectives and influencing philosophy of medicine and phenomenology. He distinguished between concrete and abstract attitudes, emphasizing the importance of the latter for healthy functioning and holistic healing. Canguilhem, influenced by Goldstein, argued that health and disease are defined by an organism’s ability to adapt to its environment, emphasizing that norms are created through dynamic interactions. This view suggests that normality is subjective and context-dependent. Merleau-Ponty extended Goldstein’s ideas to phenomenology, proposing that perception is embodied and that bodily movements are intentional, reflecting a coherent and adaptive response to the world. By exploring the holistic and integrative views of Goldstein, Canguilhem, and Merleau-Ponty, this study highlights the profound impact of these ideas on contemporary discussions in philosophy of medicine, underscoring the importance of understanding life as both normative and intentional.

본 연구는 쿠르트 골드슈타인의 임상 연구와 그로부터 영향을 받은 조르주 캉길렘 및 모리스 메를로-퐁티의 철학을 통해 생명의 규범적이고 의도적인 본질을 탐구한다. 골드슈타인의 전체론적 접근은 유기체를 통합된 존재로 보고, 환원주의적 관점을 비판하며, 이 관점은 현상학과 의학철학에 영향을 미쳤다. 그는 구체적 태도와 추상적 태도를 구별하며, 후자가 건강한 기능과 전체적 치유에 중요함을 강조했다. 골드슈타인의 영향을 받은 캉길렘은 건강과 질병이 유기체의 환경 적응 능력에 의해 정의된다고 주장하며, 규범이 환경과의 동적인 상호작용을 통해 생성된다고 강조했다. 이러한 관점은 정상성이 주관적이고 유기체가 처한 맥락에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 시사한다. 메를로-퐁티는 골드슈타인의 아이디어를 현상학으로 확장하여, 지각이 신체에 뿌리를 두고 있으며, 신체적 움직임이 지향적이고 세계에 대한 반응을 반영한다고 주장했다. 골드슈타인, 캉길렘, 메를로-퐁티의 전체적이고 통합적인 관점을 탐구함으로써, 본 연구를 통해 세 사람의 생각이 의학철학에 미친 영향을 검토하고, 결국 생명은 규범적이고 지향적임을 말하고자 한다.
