Abstract
Background: This study aimed to explore the experiences of Epidemiological Investigation Officers (EIOs) at the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) in responding to infectious disease outbreaks, with the goal of enhancing public understanding of the EIO role. Methods: A qualitative descriptive study design was employed using focus group interviews. Participants included seven EIOs from the KDCA, selected through purposive sampling based on their voluntary participation. Recorded interviews were transcribed and analyzed using an inductive qualitative content analysis approach. Results: From the analysis, 10 subcategories and three main themes emerged: “challenges of responding to unpredictable infectious diseases,” “high-intensity work and cumulative negative impacts,” and “growth through challenges, and gained lessons.” The study revealed both the knowledge gained through epidemiological investigations and the challenges of personal burnout and support needs among EIOs. Conclusion: EIOs have demonstrated growth through diverse experiences in infectious disease responses. To improve the effectiveness and organization of epidemiological investigations, it is essential to continually assess EIOs’ response experiences and support their professional development through structured support from health authorities.
