Enterococcus pallens is a yellow-pigmented Enterococcus species and to date, only four cases of its isolation have been reported. All previous strains were isolated from ascitic fluid samples from Canadian patients with peritonitis. Here, we report the first strain of E. pallens isolated in Korea. A 71-year-old male patient with liver cirrhosis visited the emergency department due to an increased ascitic fluid volume. Gram-positive cocci were detected in ascitic fluid culture. The strain showed small, gray, alpha-hemolytic colonies with yellow pigmentation on a blood agar plate. The strain was identified as E. pallens using a MALDI Biotyper (Bruker Daltonics, Germany) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The strain showed susceptibility to most antimicrobials on an antimicrobial sensitivity test using a VITEK 2 GP, P600 panel (bioMérieux, France). This case report provides detailed information on the steps taken to identify E. pallens and its characteristics, offering valuable insights for further identification.
