The purpose of this study was to classify the optimal latent profiles of social interaction, executive function, behavior problems in children with autism spectrum disorders(ASD) and to examine their relationship with parenting stress and maternal depression. The subjects were 141 children with ASD and their mothers. The SRS, K-CBCL, CCTT, STROOP, K-WISC-IV, K-PSI, K-BDI-II, K-CARS2 were used as the measuring instruments. The results of a latent profile analysis indicated that a three-profile model was the best model, based on multiple model fit indices; ‘Social interaction deficit type’, ‘Social interaction + Executive function deficit type’, ‘Social interaction + Executive function deficit & Behavior problems type’. When verifying whether there are differences in parenting stress and maternal depression of each type, the result showed that the mothers in ‘Social interaction + Executive function deficit & Behavior problems type’ were found to be the most depressed. On the other hand, no significant differences in depression was found between ‘Social interaction deficit type’ and ‘Social interaction + Executive function deficit type’. Parenting stress was also most severe in ‘Social interaction + Executive function deficit & behavior problems type’, but secondly in ‘Social interaction + Executive function deficit type’, and lowest in ‘Social interaction deficit type’. The implication of the results of this study is that children with ASD can be classified into subtypes according to their social interaction, executive function and behavior problems. Secondly, when the children’s executive function is good, parenting stress was also low. Third, executive function and behavior problems of children with ASD are important variables that predict maternal depression. These results provide useful implications for preparing specific intervention strategies for reducing parenting stress and depression of mothers.
