Purpose : Insulin dependent childhood onset diabetes is long-term disease that re-quires regularity in daily life: careful balancing of diet, frequent blood sampling and insulin injection. Therefore, significant psychosocial stress and maladjustment may exist. The purpose of this study was to examine emotional and behavioral problems in IDD children.
Methods : We used CBCL(child behavioral checklist) which contains 112 items. Parents of 34 IDDM children were asked to answer a questionnare concerning their child's emotional and behavioral problems.
Results :
1) 26.4% of IDDM children showed psychological maladjustment, which is 2.6 times higher than healthy normal children(10%) .
2) The CBCL total score did not differ significantly within the genders.
3) In case of preadolescent male children, emotional instability, social withdrawal, aggression and obsessive-depression were major problems. In case of Preadolescent female children, depression, aggression, emotional instability and hyperactivity were major problems. In adolescent males, hyperactivity, social withdrawal, aggression and immaturity were major problems. In adolescent females, depression was a major problem.
Conclusions : Many of IDDM children experienced internalizing emotional problems such as depression, social withdrawal and emotional instability These problems are slightly different according to the developmental stage. When we treat IDDM children, not only conventional medical care but also gradual emotional support may be needed.
