Abstract
The pleomorphic adenoma is the most common tumor of major and minor salivary glands, and it is composed of epithelial cell and mesenchymal elements.
Macroscopically it has a surrounding capsule from which it can be enucleated, however these tumors do not have a true capsule but compress surrounding normal salivary gland, frequently having finger-like extensions into the normal tissues. In 1972, Krolls said recurrent disease is thought to be due to these small islands of tumor which can be left behind at surgery. Another theory of recurrence is that should the tumor be ruptured during excision spillage of tumor cells into the wound may lead to implantation and growth of multiple nodules of pleomorphic adenoma. (Fee et al., 1978) We experienced a case of recurrent pleomorphic adenoma on submandibular area which has clinically malignant characters. This mass was treated with wide surgical excision and it has been no specific change in close follow-up.
