Abstract
Objects : This study was carried out to analyze the differences of schizophrenia families’ needs for professional help in accordance with the chronicity of patients’ illness.

Methods : The subject of this study is 140 families with schizophrenia who were admitted into the Kwang-ju Severance Psychiatric Hospital, Yonsei University, College of Medicine,
This study utilizes the structured questionnaire to measure families’ needs for professional help. The statistical analysis is performed by SPSS/PC+. It utilize multiple regression to analyze the impact of chronicity of patient’s illness on families’ needs for professional help.

Results : Families with schizophrenia need for professional help that were given. According to multiple regression, their needs for professional help are not entirely increased by the chronicity of patient’s illness. However their need increased in accordance with the chronicity of patient’s illness in the area of utilizing the community resources, understanding of social function, coping with the heavy smoking, drinking and drug abuse, encouraging vocational rehabilitation, coping with psychiatric symptoms and managing the patient’s interpersonal relationship.

Conclusion : The chronicity of patient’s illness and families social economic factors vary the needs for professional help. Therefore more appropriate professional help according to patient’s chronicity, should be provided in order to relieve the burden of schizophrenia families.
