We analyzed 7,235 patients who admitted to the I and II ICU, Yonsei University College of Medicine from March 1990 to February l995, according to mortality, length of ICU stay, department, age and duration with ventilatory support. We also analyzed mortality cases admitted to the ICU from March 1994 to February l995, according to the length of the ICU stay. Among them, patients who expired within 48 hours were analyzed according to department, age and primary organ failure on admission. 1) During the 5 years 7.235 patients were admitted. The mortality rate was 6.8% in 1990, and increased to 13.4% in 1994. 2) The average duration of an ICU stay was 8.2 days. The largest number of patients stayed in the ICU from 3 to 5 days. The mortality rate was highest in patients who stayed in ICU for less than 2 days. 3) Most patients were in their 40s and 50's. However the highest mortality rate among the pre-teenage group & teenage group. 4) Most of patients were referred from the most in Internal Medicine Department. The mortality rate was highest among patients of the Pediatric Department. 5) 5l.6% of the cases were supported with a ventilator with the average ventilatory sup- port being 6.6 days. 6) 42.5% of the mortality cases expired within 48 hours after admission from March 1994 to February 1995. Among them the proportion of patients was 55.4 % from the Internal Medicine Department and 28.4% from the Pediatrics. The primary organ failure at admission to ICU was respiratory. hematologic. and hepatobiliary system.
