Abstract
This study was to explain correlation of intercultural communicative competence, empathy, and nursing professionalism on the cultural competence and influencing factors of cultural competence in undergraduate nursing students. A total 199 subjects was surveyed using a self-report instrument from three nursing colleges. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, pearson correlation, and multiple regression. There was a significant positive correlation between cultural competence, intercultural communicative competence, empathy, and nursing professionalism. The regression model explained 25% of the significant factors- intercultural communicative competence (beta=.41, p<.001), frequency of nursing experience of multicultural patient(beta=.14, p=.034). Empathy was significant effect on cultural awareness (beta=.17, p=.006) and cultural sensitivity (beta=.21, p=.001) while nursing professionalism had a significant on cultural awareness (beta=.32, p<.001), cultural sensitivity (beta=.23, p<.001) and cultural skills(beta=.14, p=.046). This finding showed that there were differences in the influencing factors among cultural competence and its sub domain. This study suggests developing nursing educational programs using these influencing factors and providing diverse clinical practicum environment needs to promote cultural competence.
