The aim of this study was to explore uncertainty, depression, and anxiety of isolated inpatients and to identify associations among them specifically focusing on state anxiety. The data were collected from October 4, 2018 to March 26, 2019 using a structured questionnaires and one-on-one semi-structured interviews for patients who have been isolated at a acute care hospital in Seoul. A total of 92 were used in the final analysis. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, one-way ANOVA with Scheffé's test, Pearson’s correlation coefficients, and a multiple linear regression analysis using SPSS 23.0. The following are the results of this study. 1. Uncertainty of isolated patients was 85.88±15.48 points out of 165 points, depression was 19.63±12.86 points out of 60 points, state anxiety and trait anxiety were 45.51±11.39 points and 42.40±9.18 points respectively. 2. Isolated patients showed significant differences in uncertainty, depression, trait anxiety and state anxiety according to gender, sufficient information about isolation, and type of isolation. 3. The state anxiety of hospitalized inpatients in the hospital was positively correlated with the uncertainty(ambiguity, complexity, and inconsistency), depression(r=.67, p<.001), and trait anxiety(r=.71, p<.001) 4. In the multiple linear regression analysis, the explanatory power of the regression model of the state anxiety related factors in isolated inpatients was identified as R2=.618, Adjusted R2=.586(F=19.44, p<.001). The state anxiety score increases when there was not provided sufficient information about isolation(β=.23, p=.005), higher levels of depression(β=.24, p=.020) and trait anxiety(β=.49, p<.001). 5. In the content analysis of the medical staff’s information on isolation, three themes were identified, isolation disease-related needs, isolation explanation-related needs, and isolation environment-related needs. Based on the above results, it is necessary to improve the awareness of mental health of the isolated patients in order to reduce the uncertainty, depression, and anxiety. It is necessary to develop and provide an integrated assessment and intervention based on socio-demographic characteristics and characteristics related to isolation of the subject. Our study provides fundamental information of the mental health in isolated inpatients experiencing negative pressure isolation, contact isolation, or aseptic isolation patients in hospitals. It is also critical to enhance mental health for patients in isolation. This study findings are expected to support developing strategies of mental health interventions of patients in isolation working with government and medical institutions.-
