Abstract
Recent Surgical reports of the acoustic neuroma were proved that facial function and hearing could be possible to preserve in the small sized tumor. I reviewed surgical results of the acoustic tumors in aspect of functional preservation. This study was designed to investigate the surgical results of the acoustic tumors retrospectively and tried to provide the therapeutic strategy. The data were collected from 24 acoustic tumor patients, who were conducted surgery by various surgical techniques from March 1992 to December 1996 at the ENT department of Yonsei Medical Center. The data were analysed retrospectively. Immediate postoperative facial function was House-Brackmaann grade I or II in 17 cases(70.7%) and additional 3 cases recovered to House-Brackmann grade I or II within 6 months. Finally, facial nerve function was preserved in 20 cases (83.2%). Hearing was preserved in 3 cases among seven cases which were indicated to save hearing function. The tumor was removed incompletely in 2 cases and they were treated with gamma knife. Hearing and facial function could be preserved in cases less than 1.5 cm sized acoustic tumor.
