The purpose of this study was to investigate associations of healthcare transition readiness with family support and self-management competency in emerging adults with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. A cross-sectional survey with a structured questionnaire was conducted between May, 2 and June 4, 2017. Patients (n = 87) ages 16 to 24 were recruited from the outpatient clinic of S children’s hospital and online websites for patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent t-test, One-way ANOVA, Pearson’s correlation, and multivariate linear regression with SPSS IBM 23.0 program, where the level of significance was set at 0.05 two-tailed. The major study findings are as follows: 1. A mean score of family support in emerging adults with Type 1 diabetes mellitus was 3.92±0.92 out of 5. A score of therapeutic support was lower than that of emotional support. 2. A mean score of self-management competency was 3.92±0.91 out of 5. The hypoglycemia handling domain was the highest in 9 domains. 3. A mean score of healthcare transition readiness was 3.47±0.49 out of 5. The scores of all domains, except for disease knowledge and medicine management, were lower than the grand mean of the total scores of healthcare transition readiness. 4. Healthcare transition readiness was positively correlated with family support (r = .257, p = .016) and self-management competency (r = .606, p < .001). 5. Multivariate linear regression showed that self-management competency and patient’s age significantly explained 40.1% of the variance of healthcare transition readiness (F = 12.527, p < .001). Self-management competency (β = .699, p < .001) and patient’s age (β = .229, p = .010) were significant factors associated with healthcare transition readiness. In conclusion, these study findings suggest that it is necessary to improve the self-management competency in emerging adults with Type 1 diabetes as they enhance their healthcare transition readiness.-
