The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of emotional labor, which is a type of major job characteristics experienced by physical therapists and occupational therapists, on depression. This study found the proportion of the depressed group was higher in women, aged in their 20s and single. As a result of comparing the depressed group with the normal and risk groups by the sub-areas of emotional labor, the proportion of the depressed group was significantly higher than that of normal group (p <0.05). As a result of analyzing general and occupational characteristics and the effects of emotional labor on depression, the degree of depression of the risk group in the ‘needs and regulation of emotional regulation’ area was 1.65 times higher than that of the normal group, and 3.72 times higher than the normal group. Concerning the ‘support and protection system of the organization’, the degree of depression was 1.59 times higher than that of the normal group. Study results found that emotional labor was related to depression. Effective methods of protecting therapist from emotional labor issues should be introduced in order to prevent depression of physical and occupational therapists.
