Resting heart rate has been shown to be associated with metabolic abnormalities but the association between resting heart rate and abdominal adipose tissue has not been elucidated. The purpose of this study was to examine the association of resting heart rate with abdominal subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue in overweight and obese adults. A total of 99 overweight and obese adults(male:44, female:55) participated in this study(BMI: 27.73±3.21 kg/m2). Resting heart rate was measured using a heart rate monitor after sufficient rest, and visceral and subcutaneous adipose tissue were measured by computed tomography. The result showed a positive correlation between resting heart rate and visceral adipose tissue after adjusting for age and gender(r=.276, p=.006). Also, when the participants were divided into quartiles according to resting heart rate, participant with the highest resting heart rate had significantly more visceral adipose tissue compared to the other groups(Q4: 123.92±6.62 cm2 vs. Q1: 98.18±7.28 cm2, Q2: 100.94±7.32 cm2, Q3: 97.94±7.04 cm2). Multiple linear regression showed that resting heart rate was related to visceral adipose tissue independent of age, gender and BMI(β=.163, p=.037). In conclusion, resting heart rate found to be independently associated with visceral adipose tissue in overweight and obese adults, and may be a potential clinical marker of over accumulation of visceral adiposity.-
