dc.description.abstract | Background: C-reactive protein (CRP) levels predict outcome in hypertensive patients with atherosclerosis. Arterial stiffness also independently predicts all-cause and cardiovascular mortality and may be involved in process of atherosclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), a marker of arterial stiffness, and inflammation. Methods: Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) and ankle-brachial index (ABI) were assessed in 63 individuals. Age, gender, smoking, pulse pressure, body mass index (BMI) ,fasting blood glucose, lipid parameters, CRP, lipoprotein (a) were measured. Pearson’s correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis were conducted to identify the relationship betweeen baPWV and parameters. Results: Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) was correlated significantly with age (r=0.497; P<0.001), pulse pressure (r=0.454; P=0.001), high density lipoprotein (r=0.286; P=0.023), and CRP (r=0.288; P=0.022). In multiple regression models, after adjustment for age, gender, BMI, heart rate, pulse pressure, high density lipoprotein, and hypertension medication, baPWV was independently correlated with CRP (adjusted R2=0.417, P=0.034). Conclusion: Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity had a significant relation with levels of CRP in patients with hypertension, suggesting that inflammation may be involved in arterial stiffening. | - |
