dc.description.abstract[한글] [영문] Changes in the pattern of urban population distribution in Korea are produced by internal migration and variations of natural increase rate. The latter factor marked by regional and rural-urban differentials in fertility would produce a considerable change in the pattern of population distribution in course of a generation. Internal migration often operates to offset changes in the pattern of urban population distribution; thus cityward migration has offset the impact of high natural increase in rural area. In terms of the net balance of natural increase and internal migration a certain assumption for equilibrium between areas will be raised. In this paper urban populations from 1955 to 1966 are analized to find out the empirical rule, which is expected to associated with the total population, on the distribution of urban populations among three censuses. The results are as follows: 1. The following rank-size rule applies to urban populations and is log S^^R = 1og M - n log R where R: the R-th rank of urban populations S^^R: population of the R-th city M: population of the largest city 1955; 1,198,400 1960; 1,312,900 1966; 1,695,300 n≒1 2. Let C be the number of the districts and U defined as the fraction of the total population, P^^T, that lives in the districts above Eub in Korea, then U = o.035√C If the rank-size rule represents an equilibrium among competing cities, this relation of U to C must mean that there is also an equilibrium between the competing attractions of rural and urban life. 3. The total rural population in Korea, P^^R, has been reaching its maximum value and the expected increase in P^^T goes to an increase in P^^U. 4. The distribution of the total demographic energy is similar to the shape of those of the distribution in urban population.-
