[영문]Most aged people in the hospital need long-term hospitalization and prevention of frequent occurrence of complications caused by aging. For this reason, medical treatment and nursing of the old has a special goal. In other words, geriatrics hospital nurses are in demand who can take such roles as an expert in clinical practices, an educator, a counselor and supporter, a researcher, a manager, and an assistant for ethical decision-making in order to improve skills for treating generally common geriatric diseases, reduce the period of old patients'' hospitalization, decrease re-hospitalization, and minimize nursing expenses. As a descriptive research to examine job importance perceived by nurses according to roles of geriatrics hospital nurses, this study collected data from 170 nurses working at a general university hospital, a public health center, or a sanatorium for the old, using job by nurses'' key abilities suggested by the Korea Institute of Nursing (2004) as a tool from April 11 to 27, 2005. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS-Window 12.0 statistical program along with mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, and Scheffe′test. The results can be summarized as follows:1. As for importance of the role as a professional nursing practitioner by categories, the mean was highest in general, accurate, and systematic physical examination of subjects and lowest in application of theories, science, and art to practices.2. As for importance of the role as an educator by categories, it was highest in offering good counseling for health improvement, prevention of diseases and disabilities, and self-management and lowest in demonstration of nursing art in educating individuals, family members, and staff members.3. As for importance of the role as a researcher by categories, it was highest in identification of research questions and communication with nurses, researchers, and managers and lowest in criticizing researches for adaptability.4. As for importance of the role as a leader by categories, it was highest in improvement of expertise through self-development and lowest in management of many kinds of documents about nursing.5. As for importance of the role as an advisor and cooperator by categories, it was highest in construction of a health management team and cooperation system for cooperative practices and lowest in responding to advice by the health management team.6. As for differences in job importance of geriatrics hospital nurses by institutions, there were statistically significant differences in the role as a professional nursing practitioner (p<.035), an educator (p<.006), a researcher (p<.002), and a leader (p<.001) while there was no statically significant difference in the role as an advisor and cooperator (p>.165).7. As for differences in job importance of geriatrics hospital nurses by working career, there were statistically significant differences in the role as a professional nursing practitioner (p<.021), an educator (p<.004), a researcher (p<.001), and a leader (p<.013) while there was no statistically significant difference in the role as an advisor and cooperator (p>.053).8. As for job importance of geriatrics hospital nurses by school career, university graduates showed higher marks in all roles as a professional nursing practitioner, an educator, a researcher, a leader, and an advisor and cooperator than college graduates; however, there was no statistically significant difference.9. As for job importance of geriatrics hospital nurses by positions, responsible nurses showed high perception of the role as a professional nursing practitioner while head nurses showed high perception of the roles as an educator, a researcher, a leader, and an advisor and cooperator; however, there was no statistically significant difference.-
