인터넷은 전통적 교육의 패러다임으로부터 가상교육이라는 새 교육형태를 가져왔다. 이것은 학습자들에게 물리적, 시간적 편이성을 제공하고 나아가서 영어교육에서 강조하는 원어민과의 접촉성과 실제적 영어사용의 기회를 확대시켰다. 가상교육의 가장 큰 장점은 다양한 상호작용 유형이 가능하다는 것이다. 학습자와 교재와의 상호작용뿐만 아니라 발전된 프로그램 등을 통해서 인간간의 커뮤니케이션을 촉진시키고 있다. 영어교육에서 강조하는 의사소통 능력은 대인간의 커뮤니케이션을 기초로 신장시킬 수 있다. 즉 인간간의 커뮤니케이션은 영어교육의 학습방법 중 중요한 요소이다.

그러므로 본 논문은 이론적인 가상영어교육의 상호작용 형태를 고찰해보고 현재 시행되고 있는 인터넷 학습사이트들의 커뮤니케이션 유형에 대한 분석을 통하여 영어학습사이트로서의 질적 검증을 시도하였다.

실제연구에서는 야후코리아 검색 사이트를 이용하여 검색된 61개의 원격교육 영어학습 사이트를 대상으로 Moore의 분류에 따라 학습자-내용간, 학습자-학습자간, 학습자-교수자간으로 상호작용의 유형을 분석하였다. 학습자-내용간은 학습자료실, 온라인교재, 온라인강의 형태로 진행되고 있었다. 학습자-교수자간이나 학습자-학습자간의 인간간의 커뮤니케이션은 실시간적으로 일어나는 인터넷 전자채팅이 있었고, 비실시간으로 일어나는 토론방, 게시판, 전자우편, 동호회활동 등이 있었다.

실제연구분석 결과 현재 진행중인 인터넷 영어학습의 커뮤니케이션 유형은 다음과 같은 특징을 가지고 있었다. 첫째, 학습자-내용간, 학습자-교수자간의 상호작용은 활발히 이루어지고 있었으나 학습자-학습자간의 상호작용은 잘 이루어지고 있지 않았다. 둘째, 인간간의 상호작용을 쌍방향 상호작용이라고 할 때, 학습사이트 내에서 쌍방향 상호작용과 일방향 상호작용이 모두 이루어지고 있었으나 쌍방향 상호작용은 게시판과 전자우편에 편중되는 현상을 보이고 있었다. 셋째, 쌍방향 상호작용 중 학습자간의 상호작용은 미미한 편이었다. 마지막으로 대부분의 커뮤니케이션 형태가 비실시간으로 이루어지고 있었으며, 실시간 형태는 인터넷 전자채팅에 국한되어 있었다.

이러한 연구결과를 바탕으로 앞으로 인터넷 영어학습사이트들의 커뮤니케이션을 향상시키기 위한 제언은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 게시판과 전자우편 외에, 학습자가 쉽게 이용할 수 있는 쌍방향 커뮤니케이션 형태를 개발하여야 한다. 둘째, 학습자간의 커뮤니케이션을 통하여 협동학습을 촉진할 수 있는 프로그램을 구상하여야 한다. 마지막으로 학습사이트의 운영자 즉 교수자의 지속적인 인터넷 교육이 필요하다.

The education using Internet can change the traditional education paradigm into new systems, providing language students and teachers with many useful tools and environments. Computer-mediated communication

(CMC) can provide students with opportunities to communicate with people all over the world in English education.

Thus, The main purpose of this study is to survey and analyze the current trends of English education on the Internet, focusing on Korean online English learning sites and discuss their various communication types.

To examine the current status of online English communication types, 84 English learning sites were searched by Yahoo (http://www.yahoo.co.kr)

and among them, the 61 sites were examined with respect to communication types: students-materials, students-teachers, students-students.

The results are as follows:

First, students interacted with materials and teachers actively but students' interaction with students are poor. So we need to develope various and useful programs to provoke communication among students.

Second, in most English learning sites, there are two-way communication:

students-teachers, students-students asynchronously. The types of communication in human interaction focused on e-mail and bulletin board system. So we need the way of communication among humans synchronously such as MOO.

Finally, to solve the those problems, teacher should develope themselves to adapt the Internet environments and apply good programs in designing some good English learning sites.
