From ancient to the present time the use of honey in medical treatment has been uder investigation. (Dold, 1937) In the past although many investigations have been made on the effects of different food on gastric acid secretion. Studies concerning the effect of honey on gastric acidity are lacking. This is so in spite of the wide use of honey for gastrointestinal troubles.

This is a report on the gastric stimulating effect of honey or sugar.

Studies wer made on 17 patients with hypoacidity, 32 patients with normoacidity, and 29 patients with hyperacidity, who were aditted to Yonsei University Severance Hospital from March 1964 to November 1964.

Pure honey (Acasia) and cane sugar were used for this study. Each patient had two gastric analysis, the first after ingestion an Ewald test meal and second following honey or sugar with the interval of a few days, and the results were compared.

For several days before the study any drug which might influence gastric acid secretion was stopped.

There was no any appreciable difference between the results of gastric acidity stimulated by honey or sugar and that following an Eqald test meal in the groups of the patients with hypoacidity. In the secode groups of the patients with normoacidity were slightly decreased in gastric acidity with similar rates following honey and sugar comparing with the results of Ewald test meal. And the last groups of the patients with hyperacidity were significantly decreased gastric acidity in both tests, especially following in honey ingestion.

It has been thought that main components of honey or sugar, namely glucose and fructose may cause a diminution of gastric acid secretion directly or by the humoral route. In addition the effect of vitamine, minerals, inhibine and fat substances of the honey may also influence gastric acid secretion.

This study concerning that the effects of honey on gastric acidity may be used therapeutically for the patients with hyperacidi.
