Attitudes of Nurses Toward Comprehensive Nursing Care

Presently, there are increasing demand for the compresensive nursing care from

our modern complex and dynamically changing society.

Before attempting to meet the social needs or implementing the comprehensive

nursing care, there should be an appropriate nurses' attitudes toward this, since

it is a necessary ingredient of comprehensive nursing care.

The purpose of this study was to provide some suggestions in the direction of the

professional nursing on the whole and specifically for the clinical practitioners,

nursing administrators, and nursing educators.

three hypothesis were tested: 1. "Nurses demonst rate favourable attitudes toward

comprehensive nursing care" ― this was proved althought there was less emphasis

felt: 2. "Nurses graduate from collegiate and diplema schools of nursing show

differences in degrees of favourableness toward comprehensive nursing care"―this

hypothesis was confirmed: 3. " Nurses with different status in hospital show

differences in degrees of favourableness toward comprehensive nursing care"―this

view was disconfirmed.

Attitudes are defined as "the prepositions, or persistent preferences to perform,

perceive, think, and feel in relation to comprehensive nursing care": the latter

"refers to a systematic process of problem diagnosis, problem analysis, development

of a plan of care and continuous assessment of the evolving plan of care in which

the patient is viewed as a person".

A 40-item attitude questionnaire was given to 127 professional nurses

representing 270 nurses employes and the areas in which the nursing function

required at Yonsei Medical Center in Seoul, Korea.

109 questionnaires returned anonymoustly showed that there are 53 diploma

graduates and 56 college graduates. All of them are registered professional nurses.

The investigated areas through the questionnaire were:

1. The conception of comprehensive nursing care,

2. Interpersonal relationships(team work, communication, patient's teaching were

included)

3. Problem-solving for the patient's need.

4. The evaluation of nursing activities.

Conclusions drawn form these data presented in relation to the hypothesis tested

and areas investigated showed that there will be some needs for further

study(desirable to be done similarly with this project) with various samples

including graduates of high technical school of nursing and of all age groups.
