Abstract

We have observed and analysed 503 cases of congenitally malformed babies epidemiologically among 21,206 newborns delivered after gestation of 20 wks in Severance hospital of Yonsei University Medical College from Mar-1. 1971 to Fed-28,

1981.

The results were as follows.

1. Among the total 21,206 newborns, the overall incidence of congenitally malformed baby was 2.37%.

2. The incidence of congenitally malformed babies in male was higher than in female.

3. The incidence of congenitally mal formed babies terminating in stillbirth was 3.65% as compared to 2.34% in live birth.

4. The incidence of congenitally malformed babies was not increased with maternal age.

5. No significant relationship was seen with regard to parity.

6. The incidence of having congenitally malformed babies was higher in babies weighing less than 2500gms(4.81%) than in babies weighing more than 2500gms (2.18%).

7. Systematic distribution of the congenitally malformed babies studied here showed 30.42% for musculoskeletal system, 28.63% for digestive system and 17.5% for urogenital system.
