[영문]As esthetic demand is increasing, more and more orthodontic patients now want orthodontic treatment that does not hurt their appearance during the treatment period. Various orthodontic appliances and archwires have been developed in an effort to improve esthetics and polymer coated archwires are one of the most commonly used items in this regard. However, the layer of this polymer coating has disadvantages such as severe discoloration and deterioration of polymer coating layer, which, for sure, undermines esthetics. In particular, such deterioration of coating layer increases friction between brackets and archwires, which in turn leads to delay in sliding movement of teeth during the orthodontic treatment. Alternately, tooth colored-metal coated archwires are used to make up for such shortcomings of the polymer coated archwires, but again, these are not widely used because they are relatively expensive and esthetically unsatisfactory. Nevertheless, the properties required of esthetic NiTi archwires and their coating materials have not been fully explored. The objective of this study were to compare the surface characteristics, physical properties, and esthetic maintenance of the esthetic NiTi archwires that generate an appropriate orthodontic force. In this study, two kinds of commercially available polymer coated NiTi archwires and two kinds of metal coated NiTi archwires were selected as esthetic NiTi archwires. In addition, four kinds of commercially available uncoated NiTi archwires that came in the same size and shape as the aforementioned esthetic NiTi archwires by the same manufacturers were tested. All of the selected wires were in round shape and 0.016" in diameter. In each wire, chemical composition, SEM images, three-point bending test at 36.5 ℃, friction test, surface roughness, and SEM images of coating layer after friction test were observed. The results were as follows: 1. The chemical composition analysis found that the coating layers of Ultraesthetic SE NiTi Tooth colored archwire (PG, G&H) and Perfect NiTi coated archwire (PH, Hubit) were made of the same kind of polymer while the coating layer of White wire Sentalloy (MT, Tomy) was made of Au-Rh alloy and the coating layer of Experimental Ag coated NiTi (MB, Biomaterials Korea) was made of Ag. 2. According to the phase analysis, all uncoated wires except PG showed the cubic austenite structures and all coated wires except PG showed martensitic transformation. 3. The SEM surface images of NiTi archwires showed the surface morphology of polymer-coated NiTi was smoother than that of metal-coated NiTi. The diameter was smallest at PG and largest at PH. As for the thickness, coating layer of MT was the thinnest while that of PH was the thickest. 4. According to the three point bending test, the polymer coated NiTi archwires showed less unloading force values than uncoated NiTi archwires, whereas metal coated NiTi archwires showed more unloading force values than uncoated NiTi archwires (p<0.05). 5. The friction test illustrated that the static and kinetic frictional forces of the coated NiTi archwires were statistically higher than those of the uncoated NiTi archwires. Especially, the polymer-coated NiTi archwires showed significantly higher frictional force (p<0.05). 6. According to the tests on surface roughness, it was higher in the coated NiTi archwires than in the uncoated NiTi archiwires. In particular, surface roughness was increased significantly in the polymer coated NiTi archwires (p<0.05). MT was the lowest in terms of surface roughness while PH was the highest. Surface roughness increased in proportion to frictional force of the coated NiTi archwires and it was statistically significant (p<0.05). 7. After friction test, SEM surface images showed severe deterioration in the polymer coating layer and minor exfoliation in the metal coating layer. To conclude, the metal coated NiTi archwires were superior to the polymer coated NiTi archwires in terms of frictional properties and surface characteristics. Considering the fact that the polymer coated NiTi archwires showed significantly higher frictional force and surface roughness regardless of the diameter, frictional losses are expected to be greater in a clinical situation. Therefore, it is recommended that further study on the chemical composition and physical properties of esthetic coating layer be carried out in order to enhance esthetics while maintaining orthodontic effectiveness.-
