Abstract

[영문]Internet users use health-related sites frequently, and the number of people using these sites is increasing ever due to increased interest over the improved quality of life and health. Despite the fact that the Internet provides easy access to health information to anyone, there is still the controversy over the quality of information provided on the Internet. In the case of Korea, many studies showed that there are problems with health-related information provided on the Internet. This study was conducted to determine the current status on health information according to the characteristics of those organizations

sites providing Internet health information and to evaluate the content and reliability of health information provided on the Internet by analyzing a total of 166 sites including 39 university hospital sites, 50 private hospital sites, 39 public health clinic sites, and 38 health information portal sites using the existing measuring instruments modified and supplemented.

The following results were obtained according to this study.

1. In the area of user convenience, multilanguage support was seen in 46.2% of university hospital sites, site map support in 92.3% of university hospital sites 92.3%, FAQ support in 50% of private hospital sites, search engine in 55.3% of portal sites providing health information, on-line help in 23.7% of portal sites providing health information, simple link in 100% of university hospital sites, and transmission of health information using Pop-up windows in 35.9% of university hospital sites. Thus, university hospital sites placed the highest in 4 out 7 areas.

2. In the area of privacy protection, portal sites providing health information provided relatively good privacy protection compared with any other sites showing the results that policies of private information protection were seen in 47.4% and membership operation in 71.1%.

3. In the area of purpose, 94.7% of university hospital sites stated the purposes of the center and mentioned the specific target (74.4%).

4. These sites provided general medical information (79.5%) and information related with diseases and symptoms (58.4%) the most. Medical information is provided systematically by dividing information into different diseases (81.3%). The rate of the sites mentioning the assistance of provided information was low at a total of 9.0%. The number of health information was usually less than 50 items (41.6%) in most sites. However, more than a half of the university hospital sites (51.3%) and portal sites providing health information (78.9%) provided more than 100 items.

5. The type of health information was information related with the facility in most cases. The source of information was mentioned most frequently with general medical information (43.4%). In the field of continuity, data renewal was achieved the best in private hospital sites at 94.0%. In overall, the rate of internal continuity was relatively low. On the other hand, portal sites providing health information showed a 8.9% of continuity.

6. In the area of reliability, private hospital sites and public health clinic sites contained data showing health information with no information related with the author, point of contact, and author''s credential. However, university hospital sites and portal sites provided these information.

7. In the field of interactivity, contribution by users was accepted in 51.2%. Public health clinic sites showed the most contribution at 76.9% and opinions were reflected the most in 73.3%. Bulletins were used the most to obtain user contribution.

According to the results shown in the 7 areas examined, significant differences were present according to different sites. Sufficient data were provided in this study on the need for considering the characteristics of each facility at the time of establishing evaluation criteria. I am not sure whether I understood. For quality control over health information provided on the Internet, webmasters running health information site should receive education on the importance of quality health information more than anything else. Regular surveys on user satisfaction should be conducted, and the different evaluation systems of websites befitting each facility and policies that could support the evaluation should be developed.
