Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between mental health and social adjustment of nurse aid students. The results of the study will provide basic information for educating and teaching in order to upgrade the quality nurse

aids.

A convenience sample of 246 students was selected from one academic institute for nurse aids located in Seoul.

Data were collected from the 27th of March to the 1st of April 1995 using a direct survey method.

The instruments used for this study were a mental health test modified by Lee(1986) and a social adjustment test modified by Kim(1969).

The collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, percentages, means, S.D., t-test, X**2-test and Pearson's correlation coefficient, SAS was employed for data analysis.

The result of this study are as follows:

1. The mental health of the subjects was at a moderate level.

The subjects showed higher scores in the areas of obsessive-compulsive and depression.

2. The social adjustment of subjects was at a lower level than nursing students and at the same level as middle school students.

3. Students in the class showed a higher level in mental health than students in the evening class( P <.01).

4. Subjects who were the youngest in the sibling birth order showed higher levels in social adjustment than subjects in the eldest and middle group( P <.05).

5. Relationship between Mental Health and Social Adjustment of the Subjects.

1) The Relationship between the subfactors of mental health and the social adjustment of the subjects ranged from .19 to .46.

2) The relationship of global mental health to social adjustment was .4404.

There was a positive correlation between mental health and social adjustment.

This study, has several 1imitations, but provides basic data on the mental health status and social adjustment of nurse aid students of which educators should be aware to raise the quality of nurse aides. Further studies need to be done in this field.
